Time has gotten away from me lately and I completely missed May but the prompt for I must confess this week is what are you reading so it’s the perfect opportunity!
I’ve had a bit of a mixed bag this month, and I finished a series that I fell in love with, I’m not sure how I feel about the ending though!
Reconstructing Amelia by Kimberly McCreight

First off..the reviews on Good reads (the official ones, not the reader ones) included one of my absolute pet peeves when it comes to books. One of the reviews called it ‘the next Gone Girl’ and I very nearly didn’t read this book because of that recommendation. I think a book should be allowed to be promoted a story on it’s own merit..anyway back to what the book was actually about!
Kate is a single mother, a hard working lawyer with a teenage daughter Amelia. Kate receives a phone call at work informing her that Amelia, a straight A student has been suspended. Unable to believe that Amelia could have done something worth being suspended over, Kate makes the journey to the prestigious school Amelia attends. Upon arrival, Kate discovers that the school is surrounded by the authorities, with a student in the middle of it. Amelia’s death is ruled a suicide but Kate isn’t convinced, especially after receiving chilling text messages from an unknown number. The rest of the book follows the story of Amelia in the lead up to her death, told by Amelia and her friends. Kate struggles to come to terms with Amelia’s death while trying to uncover the truth about her death.
I really enjoyed this book and I’m glad I decided to ignore the review saying it was similar to Gone Girl as it was nothing like it. It really touched on a lot of issues that affect teenagers, and there were twists and turns all over the place. I couldn’t put it down and finished it in a couple of days!
Skinjob by Bruce McCabe

Skinjob is a futuristic crime novel, which is what drew me to it in the first place. The story opens with an bomb that has taken out one of San Francisco’s Dollhouses. These Doll Houses are a little different from the norm though, as they house robots, built to move, and feel like real women to encourage their clients to act out their wildest sexual fantasy’s. The story is told through the eyes of different characters throughout the book, but the main focus is on Daniel Madsen, a new breed of agent who has been outfitted with a portable lie detector. The rest of the police force are already against him, so Madsen must work fast to make sure another bombing doesn’t happen.
I wasn’t a huge fan of this book. I think there could have been a lot more action added to it, rather than the maze of characters that kept getting added to the story. It also felt that all of the action of the story happened in the last 1/4 of the book and it was all over before I knew it. It did feel like the story was stretched out, then rushed at the end.
Let her Go by Dawn Barker
This book really tore at the heart strings. I spent a few nights in tears reading it, not just tears sliding down my face, but big old ugly body wracking sobs. It tells the story of Zoe and her struggles to conceive, the wedge that is pushed between her and her sister when a solution is found, and the family caught in the middle of it. Zoe’s sister makes a decision that can turn her life around, but it all starts to go pear shaped very quickly. I really did enjoy this book and Barker writes emotions really well. I felt like I was in the head of the characters. This is one of those books that stays with you for days afterwards.
Mortal Instruments 6 – City of Heavenly Fire by Cassandra Clare.

City of Heavenly Fire is the last installment of the Mortal Instruments series by Cassandra Clare. This series has copped a lot of flack for being a rip off of the Harry Potter series but honestly I didn’t really see the resemblance. In this last installment Sebastian has returned to full power and it is up to Clary and Jace to bring him undone. This book is action from the start, and it is probably my favourite of The Mortal Instruments series. I loved that there was a twist at the end that I really didn’t see coming!
What have you been reading this month?
I really need to find time for reading. Once upon a time, I use to read at least a book a week, lately it’s more like a book a year. Hopefully, by adding a book review element to the blog, even if it is just a monthly think I might have to force myself to find the time.
Not entirely sure where I should start though. My must read list is rather extensive.
I think I need to order #1 and 3 from my library. I’ve been on hols in the last week so that means reading lots of magazines – Yours, That’s life, Women’s Weekly and Instyle 🙂
Wow you are a great reader! I love the sound of the futuristic one, although maybe not? I’ve stopped reading to blog pretty much, naughty me x
Some great books there from the sound of it. I should probably read a bit more variety but being a space cadet and having kids interrupting I just read light ‘chick lit’. I might check out a couple of those titles.
Your last suggestion might be something I’m interested in – will have to check it out. Thanks for the tip x
Oh, I also hate that EVERYTHING is compared to Gone Girl. I’ve read other stuff I liked more than GG.
Reconstructing Amelia sounds like a book I’d like.
