Onward and Upward

I must confess…resolutions aren’t really my thing.  I hate the pressure of them and the shame in not quite getting there by the end of the year.  I also believe that if you really want to make a change then it’s up to you when to do it..not a ticking over a calendar year.

However, in saying all of that, I do have a few aspirations for the year, the things that I would like to achieve, that fit in with my mantra of ‘life is a series of baby steps’.  I don’t have to completely shake up my world, I just need to chip away at it, making the changes it needs without the overwhelming feeling of nothing staying the same.

I must confess that I do not cope well with change.  I find comfort in the routine of life.  I like to know what is coming and find myself spiraling if I have too many unexpected changes thrown my way.  This is why my mantra works so well for me.  It doesn’t feel like a complete overhaul.

My main aspiration for this year is to become more organised with my house.  My house has kind of gotten away from me over the last twelve months and I hate it.  I used to follow the Fly Lady principals but found it too much.  I do want to do something similar, just not quite so involved.  One of the things that I liked about it was that a ‘big’ clean only took 30 minutes at the most instead of the hours I spend now, often giving up because I couldn’t be bothered.

Decluttering is on the menu as well.  I have built in cupboards that span one wall of my bedroom and one whole side of it is at the stage where I have to stand back, throw something in and shut the door before it all falls out.  I don’t even know what is in there!  One of my favourite shirts got eaten by moths too so I want to get to the bottom of that.

I also want to be more organised with my blog (she says as she is typing this the night before it’s due) so that I have a bit of leeway when the mojo wanes.  I have already started on this one and have a few drafts up my sleeve, something that very rarely happens.  The mojo has turned up and I am milking it for all it’s worth!

Overall the word of the year is Organised, both in real life and on the blog.  I’m looking forward to this year.  I am going to make it my bitch!

What are your dreams for 2014?  Do you make resolutions?

    Googles Fly Lady. Hmm.

I gave up on cleaning, except for what is necessary so as not to live in crap. It’s pointless, the kibble rules over all. But I do still do a bit more if we have company, will be cleaning a bit more thoroughly today for example as Ruth has three (count them three!) teenage friends coming to stay tomorrow and two of them are Reverend’s daughters. I kid you not. You can’t make this stuff up, I’m sure she’s rebelling by being all middle class and respectable just to annoy the frack out of me. Great kids, I just have to keep the swearing and anti establishment jokes to a minimum.

Organising however gets to me too. I cleared my room out of a bunch of boxes yesterday. I have set up a desk in here for studying and writing. Yes I could – and do – work in the dining room or study but those are communal rooms obviously and people bug me sometimes in there. I wanted my own little corner. Plus it overlooks the garden and the view of the hills and the trees which is nice. I also keep throwing things out. Simplify, simplify. I want to live on a boat, with only what I need, plus some mementos and a whole lot of books 🙂

I am the opposite re routine and change. I crave change. I get scared about implementing big changes, but routine saps my soul, though I need it to function. As always, at war with my inner self on every frackin little thing.

Good luck with the reorganising and whatnot. It does feel good when it’s all done. Send me some of your energy too please, when you’re done with it 🙂

Don’t worry about cleaning Tegan! I gave that up years ago. The only cleaning I do is when people are coming over then I get a huge adrenalin rush and whip through the entire house in an hour and a half.

Good for you – my tip for decluttering is to eBay it. I’ve become a fanatic and last night my youngest caught me eyeing off her toy chest (well, plastic tub) and yelled “you are not to sell my toys. I need them all!”

The Organised Housewife & Planning with Kids are great at the house & organisation thing without being too anal. (I struggle with housework and structure, I prefer to be laid-back and take life as it comes but I found towards the end of last year that it doesn’t fare well with the kids. I was always the mum who would have to drive back to school because someone forgot their lunch or library bag etc..) I am very goal oriented though, I do like to know I have a purpose or something to work towards… Don’t be too hard on yourself Tegan-remember “A Clean house is a wasted mind”…or at least that is what I am telling myself. 🙂

I’ve always been a bit OCD fly lady (before I even knew about her) when it comes to cleaning. I can’t seem to settle and get on with other things, especially as I work mainly from home when the house isn’t organised. I’m slightly less OCD since having my girls but honestly I’m much happier when the house is clean & tidy to my usual standard.

Lately I’ve been trying to limit the cleaning to 30 minutes first thing (well after everyone is up and out) and 30 minutes before bed and have the entire family help.

YES more organised is a big thing for me too, it makes life less stressful if things aren’t left to the last minute as they ALWAYS are with me. But I thrive on deadlines, typical journo, just makes life a bit more chaotic than it needs to be probably. Slow and steady wins the race I say xx

I am much the same with you on this in both the setting of resolutions, failing of them and wanting to install more order and less chaos in both the house and life. All the best for 2014 lovely may it be filled with fairy wishes and butterfly kisses

I like to have goals rather than resolutions and agree with your comment about not waiting for the change in year to make a change! Good luck with them Tegan! I hope to be more organised this year as well!

So far not so good lol! I have had a house full of people most of the time and it’s hard to be organised when you have to work around visitors.
