I’m linking up this week with Kristy from My Home Truths for I must confess. Each week you can confess your deep dark secrets or follow along with the prompt for something a little less skeleton in the closet. This week the prompt is Baby Names.
I had no ‘must have’ names before I was pregnant. I hadn’t grown up knowing that one day I would use a name on my future child. I remember flicking through baby name books when my mum was pregnant with my brother and laughing at the ridiculous names included. We all have at one stage in our life looked up the meaning of our names. FYI my name (Tegan) means beautiful doe..suits me perfectly 😉
I bought a baby name book when I found out I was pregnant and randomly flicked through it, searching for a name for my belly bean. I made a short list. I had already decided that I wanted to use either DP middle name or my father’s middle name as a middle name for DS so the first name that I picked had to work with either of them.
I was also super vigilant about teasing. I didn’t want to give him a name that was going to render him such an outsider that his name could be used to taunt him. I also checked the initials to make sure they couldn’t be made into something inappropriate like ASS. Yeh I over thought it just a little bit.
Although I am sure in 10 or so years the children who are the proud owners of these names wish that their parents had the same forethought. People…don’t be arseholes, you might think calling your kid burger is cute now but that kid has got to live with it. Just sign them up for therapy now and be done with it.
Did you have a name picked out before your baby was born? Are you a fan of traditional or ‘out there’ names?
I’m glad they put them into two groups otherwise I would have been hard pressed to work out which was a girls’ name and which was a boys name !!!!
We did the inital thing as well to make sure that wasn’t going to be an issue down the track (FYI KAM didn’t get any teasing about her initials – that I know of !!!!)
We had three names when she was born and it took us about 2-3 weeks to decide on one – as A used to say “It doesn’t matter what we call her she isn’t going to come to us anyway ” !!!!
Have a great day !
Me
There were some crazy names in that list. I’m all for freedom and whatever but some of them are just down right cruel!
I was the same as you and never grew up thinking when I have a baby I’ll call it X. I knew one day I’d just be old with kids but hadn’t put much thought into how I’d get there 😉
My Dad wanted me to be Shane so bad, but I turned out the wrong gender. He still tried to argue Shane could be a girls name too but mum was having none of it. Even when my sister and I had kids Dad was pushing for one of us to call them Shane. Give it up old man and work on your son because we’ve got other ideas.
In the end it was so hard to find the right name. Some of the things DH was coming up with left me thinking “who are you??” We had rules too, him more than me. Nothing that can be easily teased, nothing too popular, no made up spelling, would suit any profession, suit many personalities, no dodgy initials (yes we overthought things too) He didn’t even want our girls name to be a colour or a flower. In the end I’m happy with our names, they’re different but not strange. I gave my son my dads name as his middle name. One of the best things I’ve ever done. My Dad was so proud and happy. We lost him 6 months later so even though my boy won’t know my dad, he’ll always carry his name. That’s so special to me.
I used to own a play cafe. You can imagine the names that came through the doors. I’m not going to bag anyone because lets face it we can’t all have the same names and we all have different taste but I certainly think some parents didn’t think it through enough. I see some name changes in the future….
There are so many occupations that I can imagine would scar you for life off a name. Some of the kids at DS daycare have interesting names too.
I read on facebook that someone called their baby Dream. Whats next Fridge? Sleep? Banana?
I too thought hard about the kids names and nick names they would get. 2 of mt kids names can not be shortened. 1 can be made longer but not in a bad way. And the 4th can be shortened and again not in a bad way.
Also like you I never had any baby names in mind. My husband named the first two. He picked Layla’s name as soon as we found out I was pregnant. With Maya I had her name in a list of names hubby then picked it. Hannan is named after my mother in law. Aneesah was named by my sil who told me about the name just weeks before i was due.
I went to school with a kid called Reignbeau…yeh he was a boy.
My sister is Anissa!
OMFG still laughing at that list of weird names. Leeloo? FFS? Sanity? Well, I suppose children do challenge your sanity, but seriously?
I went with boring names, Mick and I seemed to agree easier on boys names, so luckily we never had a girl. Couldn’t agree at all. He liked names like Debbie or Jennifer. No offence to anyone with those names but….
DP didn’t have a choice with DS name. He wasn’t particularly involved at the time and so I said well if you can’t be arsed doing anything else then you don’t get a choice with the name.
Mr 19’s name was also the name of a friend of my brother’s when he was little. When I told the hubster he liked it too, so we had the name sorted early on in my pregnancy (though we didn’t tell anybody).
With Miss 16 we had about a dozen names ready, but couldn’t settle on one. Once she was born I still wasn’t 100% sure of the current favourite – until it turned out that was the name of the midwife that delivered her (quick labour)!!! Meant to be 🙂
I love hearing the way that people came to decide on the names for their babies.
Yes I had a favourite girl’s name – “Jessica” for about 10 years prior to giving birth to my daughter. It was an unusual name in my generation, but of course the year my daughter was born it was top of the most popular girls names. Despite this, I still called my daughter Jess and it suits her perfectly. 🙂
I had a fave boys name but it totally didn’t go with our surname – sounded pathetic. People of Greek heritage generally name their kids after their parents or parents-in-law, which is another issue entirely!
I wanted to use either DP or my dads middle names, because neither of their first names would go with anything.
Thanks Goodness! A mother who thought about teasing when naming their child!
Mmmm…I have always worried about Tigerlily – a very interesting choice.
Celebrities are the worst for ridiculous names!
Finally catching up with blog reading and some long overdue social media oversharing! Looking forward to next week’s prompt although I may need some intervention. lol
I’ve been so slack with blog reading lately too. Brain isn’t working too great.
Gilbert’s name was picked out before he was born – we loved it, it is still a seriously cool name. But for both the girls we had a few options when I went into labour and it took a little negotiating to get them sorted – in the end my husband picked Matilda’s name and I picked Delilah’s name – can’t be much fairer than that really. Thanks so much for linking up this week Tegan!
My mum and dad decided on my brothers name as she was being wheeled into theater for her caesarian. Nothing like last minute lol.
People really don’t think do they!! I loved your wayne kerr it made me laugh!!
We also did the teasing test and the acronym test. You have to be considerate of these things. We went for elegant and old fashioned names for ours 🙂
It’s not foolproof but at least we’re not making it easy for the bullies 🙂
By the time I was on my way to hospital I had names already to go. Except for my first, it was going to be Jake Daniel or Jack Samuel, but never Jack Daniel, that would have been a bit odd, or maybe got him lots of free drinks at the pub.
I’m a bit of a traditionalist, but I am not surprised at some of the names lately, I just shake my head, each to their own I spose.
Believe it or not there’s a bloke round here somewhere called Richard Knobbs, the doctor should have slapped his parents!!
My parents went to High School with a bloke called Ronald McDonald. Poor bloke.
I like original names…if they are fitting. I also like traditional names too, though ones that aren’t too common! – picky I know. Sounds like you were pretty thorough and rational when naming your kids. Good work! And thanks so much for linking up for Sunshine Sundays. x
I like original names too, but I think names like ‘burger’ are just taking it a little bit too far!
We did name all of ours before they were born, I’m not a fan of popular/common names but I also didn’t want names that opened them up to a lifetime of teasing or correcting people’s mispronunciations. Completely by coincidence the older three ended up with Latin names, so we continued the theme with the last two. We have Maya Grace, Sienna, Mercedes, Chiara and Rosalia. I did originally want Grace as a first name for Maya but it was waaaay too popular at the time and she now has 3 Graces in her year at school.
My name is a pretty popular one..I grew up in a town with a population of about 300 and there were three Tegan’s at the school!
Seriously, some of those names just shouldn’t be allowed! After reading through them all, I find it hard to say which would be the worst. Some people just don’t think ahead, do they?
I didn’t even think about the teasing test with Bella’s name, but it hasn’t been a problem so far.
Nope some people definitely don’t think when they name their kids.
Wow people are weird! Terrible names on that list. The poor children. While I did try and choose different names they had a story and a culture behind them and I waited until i met my babies before we decided on the names. I love both names now.
Yes those poor children. I can’t imagine what when through their heads, probably nothing!
