The Lounge

Welcome to the very first meeting of the minds that is The Lounge.  Take a seat, grab a drink and share your stories.  I’ll be your host for the night, regaling you with my story telling.  Don’t be shy, gather round, we’re all friends here. Wondering what the hell I am babbling about? Click >>here<<<

This weeks story telling theme is: WHAT DID YOU THINK YOU WOULD BE BETTER AT BY NOW?

I’ve never really been interested in cooking, ok anything domestic, but I did have this illusion (fine delusion) that once I moved out of home and started being able to make my own decisions, I would magically be awesome at it.  I am after all, the Queen of Awesome.  I could go on about how much I suck but this video sums it up.

My cooking has improved slowly over the last couple of years.  Having to feed a small child means that my not eating for days and then scoffing a box of mac cheese was made redundant.  The world of easy internet access means that I am slowly improving my bag of tricks aka throw this shit together and hope it works.

Papa Devil is one of those arsey cooks.  He throws stuff together that you wouldn’t think would have a hope in hell of tasting like anything edible.  Then BAM! awesome tasting food, it rarely looks good but it’s usually to die for.  When I trie to recreate that same effect…it looks crap and it tastes worse, so I stick to the recipe books and hope for the best.

Having a toddler does nothing for your self esteem in the cooking department.  Matt and his cravat have nothing on a fussy eater.  Slaved over the stove for the last 2 hours to provide a tasty, nutritionous meal for your little darling?  9 times out 10 they will declare it yucky and proceed to eat something disgusting 10 minutes after dinner…usually off the floor.

What did you think you would be better at by now?

Oh dear! That video is truly hilarious. I had a fairly average cooking experience last night that involved having to do over the roasted vegetables. I ate some of the dried out ones too though. WASTE NOT WANT NOT TEEGS! xxx

I had a pretty lackluster effort at dinner last night. I blame it on my lack of vodka.

I do some of my best cookiing under the influence. I think there’s something in this video for all of us. Including the manufacturers of Mac and cheese 🙂 (PS… did you know if you throw frozen peas and carrots in Mac and cheese you can call it ALMOST NUTRITIOUS!?) Winning. 🙂

DUDE! You wrote my post! Lol! This is exactly what I would have written, right down to the arsey husband and toddler eating shit off the floor! I always thought that once Dave and I bought a house and I had my own kitchen then I would magically love cooking and do it all the time with joy and be really good with it. 5 and a half years later and I’m still waiting for that to happen! We were talking about the whole cooking thing the other day actually and I said to Dave that my problem is not even so much with the cooking but with the having to clean up afterwards. That’s my real weakness, as when I do actually cook its always usually pretty good. I just detest the clean-up with a passion. And he looked at me and agreed 100%, he said in the end its why he does the majority of the cooking, because even if I cook he still has to clean up after me!

Great post, I am off now to write my own. Not sure what about yet but I’ll figure something out!

I’m a bit hit and miss with my ability. Some nights I will do something and it will just fall together nicely, everyone eats it and I think I can even hear music cheering me on. Then other days, it sucks, I won’t even eat it and it ends up in the bin. I would just love somewhere in between lol. I look forward to seeing your post!

Same thing happens here all the time except I have 3 fuss pots gagging over my cooking. Bastards. So we’ve progressed to living on two minute noodles, sausages and fish fingers. I did manage to get the older two to eat home made spaghetti bolognese the other day which I loaded with vegies, but then the next time I attempt to serve that up to them they will most likely revert back to the gagging. Hmph.

Oh god, I fail at cooking too. I have a few things which I know I can churn out successfully (usually pasta-based) but I’m hopeless at following recipes. I usually feel confident and think I’ve followed everything to the letter but nothing ever tastes quite right, even if it looks just like the picture. My mum and sisters are all amazing cooks so not sure what happened to me!

I’ve been on the look out for a good linkie for ages – this one could have been made for me – to be honest, you could just keep the same theme forever, I’d never run out of things that I thought I’d be better at ;’)

I like to cook but I have the tiniest kitchen in Australia, so the process is very frustrating. Zero bench space, always looks cluttered. I’ve never bought mac and cheese. Will get it this weekend!

I so understand what you mean, by kids being the harshet critics! My husband is a chef and I am but a mere cook. We have made amazing meals to share as a family and my eldest son would prefer to eat home-made play dough. I will never understand.

It’s so frustrating. Especially when it is something that you have slaved over.

That’s why we love the Facebook page, for those weeks when a blog post is just too much or for those who don’t have a blog. We wanted The Lounge to be an all inclusive place. Thanks for sharing your story with us on the Facebook Page!

I’m a great cook (i know “tickets on myself”- I saw that eye roll!) seriously… but it makes no effing difference round here! My kids still complain, roll their eyes, huff, make excuses for why they’re full, pick, chant “KFC, KFC” until my ears bleed, and leave the fruits of my labour sitting on their plates until it is cold, crusty and fly blown!

Lesson? Don’t bother! Stick with the Mac’n’cheese- less heartache!

Love the lounge idea. Have just decided to start doing a couple of linkies and this looks like a good crew. Better late than never! Must go and narrow it down because I’m nearly 40 and there are sooooo many things I’d thought I’d be master of by now!

If you are tweeting them, would you mind pinging me when you do? I will also try to be more proactive and actually CHECK the blogs I read from time to time!
