Sleep and the Musings household don’t seem to get on very well. At least not in the conventional way. It seems that Mr 5 and I have our sleep clocks all topsy-turvy and so we are more likely to be still in bed when we need to be up and at ’em. Mr 5 is now taking melatonin and the change has been incredible. However my sleep still seems elusive.
First off I have to mention that I don’t endorse surviving on less sleep unless it is unavoidable. Good sleep hygiene is one of the best things you can do to maintain good mental health. However I know that life doesn’t always work out that way. So here are my tips for those days when sleep just isn’t happening.
Have a healthy diet
Ensure that you are eating food that is going to sustain you throughout the day. Avoid sugary foods and foods that are high in saturated fat. Not only are they bad for your overall health, but they give you a blood sugar spike before you come crashing down. Make sure that you aren’t eating just before bed too as this will hinder your attempts at a good nights sleep.
The last thing you feel like doing when you have had a bad nights sleep is exercise, I know. However it helps to get the blood flowing and increases those feel good endorphins, helping you to feel more energised. If you aren’t up for running, walking or joining a gym then I recommend heading to the pool. You don’t have to swim laps, you can simply walk up and down the pool. Being in the water means that it places less strain on your joints, but you are still getting your heart rate up.
Develop a night-time routine
Night time routines aren’t just helpful for kids, but adults too. Our bodies get used to going to sleep at a certain time and so if your normal bedtime is 2am, then it is going to take some training to make it earlier. Start off with going to bed half an hour earlier and slowly move it back a half hour at a time until you have your bed time to a time that you are happy with.
Wake up at the same time everyday
This is the one that I struggle with the most. Especially on weekends. Although I know that I feel so much better when I am getting up at the same time each day because it allows my body to prepare. It also means that I can get things done now, because I’m not wallowing in bed avoiding the world.
Give yourself time to wake up
I try to wake up at least half an hour before I really need to be up if I have to get out of the house. I find this gives me time to wake up fully and I don’t feel rushed and flustered. I just sit down with a drink and browse through social media before I get up and start getting ready. If Mr 5 hasn’t made his way into my bed during the night, then I will often just do this lying in bed.
When all else fails, sometimes you have to go for the hard stuff. Caffeine that is. I don’t drink coffee and I try not to drink coke in the mornings but sometimes there really is no other option.
