Music: The Early Years

This week the theme for Sunshine Sundays is ‘Music’.  I thought I would dazzle (or bore) you with my first albums.

I received K.D Lang’s album when I got my first CD player.  I think I listened to it a handful of times..her style wasn’t really one I loved.

This was the first album I picked out myself.  My Dad got it for me from Silly Solly’s.  I played the hell out of it.

The good old ‘best of’ albums.  Every year for Christmas I would get a variety of these babies with the hits from the previous years.  There was Pepsi Chart Hits, Now, So Fresh and 100% hits, all with the hottest hits from the year.  I still have all of them and it’s interesting seeing what different genres were popular each year.

aquaAqua was another album that got the hell played out of it.  I knew (and ahem know) the lyrics to all of the songs on this album and I was sad when it came to an untimely end..an end that we do not talk about, because the person who ended it is an arsehole.  In case you’ve never heard these guys..I give you Barbie Girl.

My Mum got this for me when her and Dad went on a trip and I had to stay home.  I hated the CD for years.  Didn’t like the music, hell I was only in primary school so anything I couldn’t dance to was uncool.  Then I turned into a moody teenager and it became a regular in the CD wallet I carried with my Discman.

I felt like such a badass when I got my Mum to buy this for me. Now there’s an oxymoron statement if I’ve ever seen one.  You see I was only 14 at the time and so needed an adult to buy the CD for me.  So badass.

What were the albums that made up your childhood?

We must be about the same age Tegan, because some of these were my first albums too! Actually this was the peak of my interest in popular music, when I actually watched Rage and listen to TripleJ. I can’t tell you how much I loved the Backstreet Boys! 😉 Thanks for linking in to #sunshinesundays xx

I remember being so excited when Rage moved their Top 50 countdown to later so that I could actually watch it. I love my sleep and not even music could interfere with that lol.

My interest in music started early & my first album (vinyl before it was cool, was all that was available). Was Explosive Hits ’76, which I still have. We also had some weird tape player (pre normal cassette which I’m trying to remember the name off) I love a sad song it played about bi planes no longer being flown – proving I am indeed 107 years old

My Mum still has all of her vinyls and I remember one of my friends asking where we got the giant CDs from lol!

She does have a really great voice, and it really comes into it’s own when she sings the more serious songs.

Love this post, Tegan. You have some mighty fine selections there. Who didn’t like the Backstreet Boys?! I can remember my excitement when they came out with ‘Backstreet’s back’. I used to love Matchbox 20 too! My first tape (showing my age) was 1987 into the groove. Oh yeah, I was the coolest 10 year old around. My first CD was Peter Andre. Not so cool now 🙂 When I got older I played the hell out of the Spice Girls and Kylie and then I got into The Superjesus, Garbage, the list goes on. Great post.

I do enjoy KD Lang. My first ever album was a “best of” compilation. I just went and looked, and I still have it – The Hitmakers – “18 original hit tracks by 18 chart-topping artists”, including the Steve Miller Band, Van Morrison, Elton John, Peter Gabriel, Jon and Vangelis, Bryan Ferry. Two things occur looking at the album – 1) these guys were all very talented and still well worth listening to and 2) where the fuck are the women? Like there weren’t talented female artists back then? At least that much has changed, we are not so likely to see an all male dominated charts as we were when I was 12 🙂

I had a ‘Girls who love Guys’ compilation album and it was full of love songs. One that I played fairly often was Chapel of Love. I was a bit of a hopeless romantic before my hormones hit and I became cynical. My mum used to cringe when she’d come home from work and I was blasted Celine Dion on the stereo loud enough that the whole street could hear it.

Thanks for the trip down memory lane. Matchbox Twenty was a big favourite of mine, in fact I have the album on my iPod! I didn’t get a CD player until I was in high school & can remember my first CD was an updated version of ‘Staying Alive’ ( I can’t even remember who it was by!). Backstreet Boys were also a favourite & like Renee I was a huge fan of ‘Backstreets Back’!

I have all of their albums in my Spotify. When I was in primary school my friends and I used to make up dances to Backstreet’s Back and one of us would video it while the others performed. Ohhh to have that much confidence again!

I never followed them in the original days, but I now know ALL the Backstreet Boys songs thanks to, ahem, my husband. Being Cuban, English music was his way to learn English. So there I sat, with an old tape recorder and cassette, stop, rewind, play, stop, rewind, play… trying to write out the lyrics for him. Today, I could just google them in two seconds! But secretly, it turned me into a groupie and we went and saw them, along with a million teenage girls…

Aah, yes, this sets an all too familiar scene lol. I received my first CD player for Christmas 1994 and my first CD was 100% hits volume 9 – you know, your so vain, get a job, tease me, sweat (a lalalala long). Oh yeah I thought I was the coolest 9yr old out lol. My first chosen albums though, same as you, backstreet boys, aqua AND…….. wait for it…………. spice girls LOL. these got the hell played out of them and my younger sister had the Vengaboys so we had a very rockin bedroom. I also purchased the 100% hits (I think #23) because it had the song ‘bitch’ on it. Thanks for the trip down memory lane.

Haha I had (and I think Mum might still have it) the Spice Girls movie on VHS and I loved it.

I had many a compilation like that Pepsi one you’ve listed – I think my first was on a cassette tape and I played it a lot.

Can’t say I was ever an Aqua fan, and I wouldn’t have liked KD Lang when I was a teenager but I do think she’s great now.

My first ever album was The Bangles – my mum picked it – I was only about seven – and I still love them!

Oh Tegan, I had vinyl!! My first album was Don Mclean’s American Pie, and I loved every song on it, and still do actually.
John downloaded that Aqua album for Bell, and we had that for every trip in the car for quite a while, not so long ago. I have to say, I loved most of it too.
And Eminem to me, is a musical genius!

Love Matchbox 20…as a child though, I listened to Abba (blame the parents!) and as a teen it was Backstreet Boys, Boyzone, Westlife…boy band-phase. Thankfully, I’m past that. I still occasionally will listen to Abba though. Guilty pleasure?

Cant say I was a Backstreet boys fan. I think I liked Bros for about a week you heard of them?? Terrible ! My first tape! was the Sugarcubes Hit. The were the band that Bjork played in with me? My first concert was the red hot chilli peppers and I am still in love with Anthony. Don’t you love the music and the memories that go with it. Thanks for making me remember. !
