Are you on crack?

Welcome to the meeting of the minds that is The Lounge.  Grab a drink, settle in and enjoy a tale or two.  This week we are talking about Cartoons.

Have you watched cartoons lately?  I’m pretty sure all of the creators are on crack….lots and lots of it.

At the moment one of Mr 4’s favourite cartoons is Adventure Time.  It’s strange and weird and strange (yes I know I said it twice, it really is that strange).  It’s like the Ren and Stimpy of the next generation..although I think Adventure Time might be a little bit more reserved than Ren and Stimpy.

I am so glad that Saturday cartoons are still a thing.  They were my favourite thing growing up (if I was awake that was) and a Saturday morning just wasn’t complete without them.  PJs were left on extra long or I’d dash into my room in between cartoons to throw on the first thing I could find if Mum told me to get dressed.

I must admit that even when Mr 4 isn’t here I prefer to watch cartoons.  Morning *adult* television is filled with infomercials, segments on how to catch a man/lose those last 10kgs/the latest celebrity scandal and it all gets massively tiresome.

While I prefer cartoons, there are definitely ones that I just cannot stomach.  I’ve tried, I just can’t do it.  At the top of my list is In the Night Garden..or as I like to call it ‘crack for kids’.  Mr 4 still loves this show if he gets a chance to watch it but thankfully I have usually managed to not be on the same channel when it starts.  It used to be great when it was on at 530pm because I would put it on while I cooked dinner.  However it’s now on at 630pm and sorry but that is Neighbours time here.

Cartoons have certainly changed over the years, but I still prefer a good old fashioned cartoon for the sake of a cartoon.  Experts can talk all they want about the benefits of educational programming but I bet if you ask your child what their favourite part of a show is, it will be something as simple as ‘Peppa jumping in puddles’ or parts that made them laugh.

Did you enjoy cartoons as a kid?  What are your kids favourite cartoons?

As a special treat I leave you with this!

The Archie Comics? My uncle has a heap of those and I used to love reading them whenever I went to stay at Granny’s.

You are so right. I think Punky’s favourite bits of Peppa are when they jump in muddy puddles and fall down laughing at the end. She always does a big fake laugh when they fall down laughing and thinks it’s hilarious! I wasn’t a big Saturday cartoon watcher, mostly because I was much more of a sleeper-in on a Saturday. Even when younger! Wish Punky took after me in that regard!

I must admit that I missed quite a few Saturday morning cartoons because I much preferred to be asleep instead.

My kids have been watching some really weird stuff lately, now that we’ve crossed that significant line from ABC2 to ABC3! How about Shezow? Dude finds a magic ring that gives him super powers, but only if he’s dressed as a woman? Ooookaaay. Or the one with crime fighting sushi? It’s a brave new world.

I watched Shezow for the first time yesterday and was WTFing through the whole thing. Where on earth do they come up with these concepts!?

Agree about In The Night Garden. So weird. Luckily Mr 5’s fascination with it didn’t last too long. I used to watch all the old school cartoons: Flinstones, Scooby Doo, Road Runner, Bugs Bunny et al. My boys seem to have moved on from cartoons recently and watch those tween oriented sit com shows like Nowhere Boys and Life With Boys. Save me.

I’ve indoctrinated my kids to love old 70s cartoons like Wacky Races, Laff-a-Lympics and the Perils of Penelope Pitstop. However, ABC4Kids is a great standby and a wonderful thing to have. Thank you, ABC!

Although I can appreciate why adults (and older kids) can’t handle In The Night Garden, I find the end of the show incredibly affecting. That beautifully sad music and the words “Don’t worry, Igglepiggle, it’s time to go.” A motto for all of us at the end of our lives, perhaps?

Yes I am so thankful for ABC!

I hope that no one decides to play the end theme song for me when I am on my death bed 😉

I haven’t heard of or seen Night Garden but occasionally while flicking through channels or working out at the gym on the weekend, I notice some of the current cartoons and am amazed! It’s changed so much since I was a kid…and yes, I totally agree that the people creating some of this stuff are high. How else would you come up with it? Oh…and I remember watching Ren and Stimpy as a teen and was so not a fan! 😛

I have to say I love the Night Garden. It is so captivating for very young children. The music is very soothing. My three year old will not watch it now so I think they outgrow it fairly quickly. I cannot really remember cartoons as a kid. Maybe the road runner.
