Welcome to the meeting of the minds that is The Lounge. Grab a drink, settle in and enjoy a tale or two. This week we are talking about Cartoons.
Have you watched cartoons lately? I’m pretty sure all of the creators are on crack….lots and lots of it.
At the moment one of Mr 4’s favourite cartoons is Adventure Time. It’s strange and weird and strange (yes I know I said it twice, it really is that strange). It’s like the Ren and Stimpy of the next generation..although I think Adventure Time might be a little bit more reserved than Ren and Stimpy.
I am so glad that Saturday cartoons are still a thing. They were my favourite thing growing up (if I was awake that was) and a Saturday morning just wasn’t complete without them. PJs were left on extra long or I’d dash into my room in between cartoons to throw on the first thing I could find if Mum told me to get dressed.
I must admit that even when Mr 4 isn’t here I prefer to watch cartoons. Morning *adult* television is filled with infomercials, segments on how to catch a man/lose those last 10kgs/the latest celebrity scandal and it all gets massively tiresome.
While I prefer cartoons, there are definitely ones that I just cannot stomach. I’ve tried, I just can’t do it. At the top of my list is In the Night Garden..or as I like to call it ‘crack for kids’. Mr 4 still loves this show if he gets a chance to watch it but thankfully I have usually managed to not be on the same channel when it starts. It used to be great when it was on at 530pm because I would put it on while I cooked dinner. However it’s now on at 630pm and sorry but that is Neighbours time here.
Cartoons have certainly changed over the years, but I still prefer a good old fashioned cartoon for the sake of a cartoon. Experts can talk all they want about the benefits of educational programming but I bet if you ask your child what their favourite part of a show is, it will be something as simple as ‘Peppa jumping in puddles’ or parts that made them laugh.
Did you enjoy cartoons as a kid? What are your kids favourite cartoons?
As a special treat I leave you with this!
