A New Breed of Stupid

Kirsty is jetsetting in New Zealand, no doubt having the time of her life so Ms Mystery Case put a call out to the regular confessors for an impromptu I must confess.

I must confess that I worry about the world we live in.  Not just in a ‘there is so much evil’ kind of way but I worry about the stupidity that is allowed to rule.  I worry about the giant cotton wool balls that are rolling around.  Not just the ones on the children, but the ones on grown adults who are passing the blame.  Paul often says that we are breeding a world of idiots who don’t know the value of common sense.

This week a Facebook friend posted a link to a recall site in the UK which stated that the popular baby seat called the Bumbo has been voluntarily recalled because it may cause head injuries if used on a raised surface.  Really?  People need to be told that if they put their baby in something without restraints, then put that something onto a table, there is a chance their baby may fall out and hurt themselves.  Really?

The Bumbo recall is just one of the examples of a product being recalled because people haven’t used it correctly and surprise, surprise they have gotten hurt.  People who make these complaints are the reason that there is ‘may contain nuts’ on packets of peanuts or ‘contents may be hot after heating’ on frozen meals.  We are dumbing down society.

I can understand the thought behind the complaints.  When my son is hurt, I come out swinging.  Hell hath no fury like a mama bear with an injured cub.  However, I have enough common sense to know that if I am not using something correctly, it is my fault or no ones at all because kids are kids who like to test boundaries.

Mr 4 is always jumping on his bed (show me someone who didn’t do that as a child and I will show you a liar!) and a couple of weeks ago he fell off and hurt himself.  Did I ring the bedding company and tell them that their product was dangerous? No, because that would be stupid.  I know how to use a bed, it’s up to me to show Mr 4 how to use a bed correctly.  That’s my responsibility, just like every other person on this planet.  It is our responsibility to use a product correctly, to sometimes admit that we were at fault.

I don’t have an issue with a product recall that is genuinely a safety risk, a dummy that has a teat that breaks off, toys that are found to contain toxic materials.  I do, however have an issue when companies are forced to toe the line for idiotic requests by people with no common sense.

Do you think we are moving into a world where common sense isn’t that common?  Is there a product you think was recalled unnecessary.

SO TRUE! And when I read about the lamp that was being recalled from IKEA because it was a choke hazard for a baby in a cot? Well don’t put cords near baby’s cots!!!!!! No one wants to take ownership for their actions anymore. Great post! x

I never jumped on beds. I was old and too grown up before my time. Now I’m thinking I might like to jump on my bed but I fear then it would need replacing, so I will wait till my next hotel audit and I will literally jump on the bed. lol

    Thanks for linking up.

I get the litigation avoidance of the companies – it’s people’s need to blame someone. Like the first reaction is to sue, as if it’s a basic human right.

Yep I can understand it from the companies perspective but it’s sad that we as a society are happy to pass the blame so easily.

Yeah, perhaps they should work on prevention and make it a compulsory subject in schools. I was talking with our psychologist before Christmas as M and I are seeing an early intervention parenting psychologist currently and apparently it is quite uncommon for many parents/people to reflect on their actions (am assuming mostly those who are required to attend these sort of sessions). Apparently me reflecting on how I have reacted to the boys in certain situations and how I could better manage it in the future is not that common!?!?!? I mean REALLY? I thought that was just a basic human action that happened naturally. Apparently not 🙁

Have you watched the movie Idiocracy? This to me is starting to become a reality in much of what we see today (although an exaggeration).

Yes, yes, so much yes! I used Bumbo seats with my twins, they were invaluable as the lazy sods wouldn’t/couldn’t sit unsupported til they were nearly a year old and *shock horror* neither of them sustained a brain injury because I followed the manufacturer’s instructions not to place them on a raised surface. Well, duh!
As for jumping on the bed, if you figure out how to get him to stop can you let me in on the secret?

Glad I wasn’t the only one with a lazy sod of a baby! Mr 4 was the same, he started to crawl at 7 months but refused to sit up until he was 11 months. he was nearly walking before he could sit up!

    People just don’t care anymore.

They also do not want to accept being a responsible parent. I look at my two kids (actually, they are almost adults 17 and 16) and remember back to always watching and teaching them things. Many people want to do there own thing and let the kids try to raise themselves.

So true, then when things don’t go their way they look for the closest person to blame. It’s not really teaching our kids anything at all.
